Sharing forensic insight with the Ministry of Justice

Our Deputy Chair, Dr Ann Priston OBE, recently delivered a guest presentation to the Strategy and User Insight Division of HM Courts and Tribunals Service, part of the Ministry of Justice. The session, attended by staff across England, Scotland, and Wales, formed part of the Division’s professional learning series and drew excellent feedback.
Dr Priston spoke about her distinguished career in forensic science — from her early work in DNA synthesis as part of a Nobel Prize–winning team at King’s College London, to her decades of service in the Metropolitan Police Forensic Science Laboratory, where she specialised in fibre evidence and worked on complex terrorism cases across the globe.
She also introduced the work of Inside Justice, illustrating how forensic expertise can make the difference between a safe conviction and a miscarriage of justice. Her presentation included examples such as the Kearney case, highlighting how the charity’s multidisciplinary approach brings together science, law, and lived experience to uncover the truth.
Attendees praised the session, and it has been shared widely across the Ministry’s professional network — a wonderful example of Inside Justice’s growing reach and impact at the heart of the justice system.
