The plight of children of women prisoners

We’re touched by the story of Kerry Wright who told BBC Woman’s Hour listeners about the impact on her as a child having both parents in prison.
England and Wales have one of the highest rates of female incarceration in western Europe – and it’s rising. Many of these women are single parents.
And in 95% of cases where mothers are imprisoned, children have to leave their family home. Such separation and upheaval causes lasting impacts as much research has shown.
At Inside Justice, we are particularly concerned about the growing number of women being imprisoned for non-violent crimes, many of whom may be victim-survivors themselves or coerced.
