True Crime Podcast helps Adnan Syed become a free man

After spending more than 20 years in prison for the murder of his girlfriend, Adnan Syed has been freed by a Balitmore judge.

Mr Syed was featured in the critically acclaimed US podcast, Serial which first aired back in 2014. Millions of listeners from across the world were gripped by the case and it spurred a whole new wave of true crime podcasts across multiple platforms.

His conviction was vacated on 19 September because the state failed to share exculpatory evidence about two potential suspects that could have helped his defence at trial (this is known as a Brady violation).

In overturning Syed’s conviction, the judge said the state must decide whether to seek a new trial date or dismiss the case against him within 30 days.
