Police extended their search this week in connection with the murder of estate agent Suzy Lamplugh.
Teams including specialist firm Alecto Forensics, which assisted the investigation into Madeleine McCann’s disapperance, began digging up the garden and garage floor of a house in Sutton Coldfield, Birmingham, the former home of the mother of prime suspect, John Cannan.
Officially declared dead in 1994, Ms Lamplugh’s body has never been found.
Cannan was jailed for life in 1989 for the rape and murder of Shirley Banks, the attempted kidnapping of Julia Holman and the rape of a woman in Reading in 1986. Named by police as the prime suspect in Lamplugh’s presumed murder in 2002, he denies the allegation and will be eligible for parole in four years.
A 2004 Metropolitan police review of the case, by DCS Barry Webb, noted: “A more positive approach from the senior investigating officer [SIO] regarding Cannan’s status as a genuine suspect could have resolved whether he was responsible for Suzy’s murder.
